Before the endosleeve

Before performing an endosleeve there are some important steps to take. Of course, the first step is to realise if the endosleeve is a good procedure for your situation.

The endosleeve is a tool to help you lose weight in combination with a healthy lifestyle and eating habits. It should be seen as a procedure to kickstart weight loss an help you maintain a healthy weight permanently. As the endosleeve mainly has a restrictive effect, ‘volume-eaters’ will benefit the most from this procedure.

People who eat small portions already might not experience a big difference after an endosleeve, possibly resulting is less weight loss. Also, if you frequently drink alcohol or eat sweets, the endosleeve is not effective.

We know that 85% of patients undergoing the endosleeve will not lose enough weight, mostly because of these reasons.

before undergoing the endosleeve

If you and your doctor have agreed to perform an endosleeve, some preoperative analyses will take place.

  • Gastroscopy: to check if your stomach is normal on the inside, mostly done under local anesthesia.

  • Cardiac analysis: in most cases an ECG is sufficient, sometimes additional cardiac tests are necessary.

  • Blood analysis: a routine blood test is always performed preoperatively.

If all tests are normal, the endosleeve procedure can be planned, usually within one month.

Waiting for the endosleeve

If you are planned to undergo the endosleeve, you should already commit to healthy lifestyle changes. Our dieticians will be more than happy to give you advice.

If you live further away, we strongly recommend to look for a dietician / nutritionist in your hometown. Frequent visits after the endosleeve result in better weight loss.

Also, try to start arranging a sports program. Chose a sport that is right for you. Do not exaggerate with sports in the beginning: chances of injury are higher and it will be harder to maintain the program if it is too heavy. It can be wise to consult a sports specialist or physiotherapist before starting.
